About Keng Tung

A Traditional Akhu Woman on the Trail

Hi! I'm Freddie. Welcome to Keng Tung!

"I have more than 15 years of professional experience as a trekking guide in Keng Tung, however, my experience is truly life-long as I was born and raised there. I speak Myanmar and Shan and many of the other local languages including Akhu, Eng, and Palaung. For international visitors, my English and Thai are both excellent. Over time, I have nurtured trust and mutually respectful relationships with Keng Tung's hill-tribe communities, so the welcomes are always warm and the visits are unobtrusive and fulfilling.
I believe in providing individual experiences for each of my tourists and tailor itineraries to suit different abilities, so please be in touch by email so we can plan your visit to
beautiful Keng Tung."

What to Expect

Keng Tung was founded by the grandson of  King Mangrai way back in the 13th century on the location of the old city of the Lawa people - the original inhabitants of the region. Today, Keng Tung is only a small rural town. However, it remains strategically placed as the regional capital of Eastern Shan State and gateway to the infamous Golden Triangle. China, Thailand, and Laos are all close neighbors. And while the district has welcomed foreign travelers since 1993, this picturesque hillside town and its culturally eclectic surrounds remain one of Myanmar's hidden trekking gems.

Spend your days with Freddie walking the hills among subsistence farmers carving a simple living and visiting traditional villages left largely untouched for centuries. Experience one-on-one interaction with hill tribe communities, enjoying a cup of tea together while you all share stories about your lives, as Freddie translates. At night, return to town in the late afternoon to a comfortable bed and dinner at a choice of local restaurants.
